5 out of 5 stars Panasonic DMR-EX78EB-K   January 6, 2009
Panasonic DMR-EX78EB-K Freeview+ 250GB HDD DVD Recorder - Black
This item arrived safely and speedily at a price I thought extremely competitive. The quality of picture via HDMI is fantastic. The instructions are easy to follow and quick to remember. The area in which I live is not noted for exceptional Freeview reception but I am pleased with the picture quality via this unit. I haven't used all the functions yet but can say that this is definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars STEVIE   January 6, 2009
I BOUGHT THE UNIT ON THE FEEDBACK WHICH WAS LEFT AT AMAZON AND I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL. THE DMR 78EB-K IS BRILLIANT AT ALL THE FUNCTIONS. HARD DRIVE IS ALMOST SILENT , NOT LIKE OTHERS I COULD NAME.PICTURE QUALITY GREAT. LOADS OF RECORDING SPACE ON THE HARDDRIVE. WELL DONE AMAZON FOR A GREAT PRICE AND FREE DELIVERY.

5 out of 5 stars Works well for me   January 4, 2009
Delivery service was excellent even in the rush before Christmas.

So far there have been no problems between Panasonic DMR-EX78EB-K Freeview+ 250GB HDD DVD Recorder and Panasonic TX-32LZD85 - 32" Widescreen Viera 1080P Full HD LCD TV.

I can record one programme whilst watching another which was a concern from other reviews I have read.

May take a while to work out how everything works but guess that is the same for most blokes who don't read the instructions.

5 out of 5 stars a great machine at a fantastic price   January 2, 2009

i bought this machine from Amazon a week before Christmas. it's my third Panasonic DVD hard drive recorder and the second one with freeview built in.

i needed the freeview as I have an old but very good analogue tv in the spare room. I did try buying a PVR (a Freeview tuner with built in hard drive) but hated it. Very slow to load up the library programmes and awful menus.

the great thing about the panasonic is that everything is in one unit. with a PVR or skybox+ you still need a seperate DVD player. i'm using the new Panasonic as my main machine and I'm really impressed with the serial link feature. this is one of the main features of Skyplus and allows you to tape a series of programmes such as Eastenders on one click. The clever trick is that it then puts all episodes in one folder, although you can choose to have the programmes in order of recording.

this feature worked really well over Christmas when the listing times kept changing. the really clever bit is that it knows if a program is a repeat and ignores it if it has all ready recorded it.

I understand the negative critical review posted- I do find the adverts on the freeview menu annoying but I can live with that.If you're moving from a video recorder it's a steep learning curve but it's worth the effort. once you've ditched videos you'll wonder how you ever coped with those boxes everywhere; trying to find a blank tape when you need one or which box a favourite program is in.

a great feature of the Panasonic is that the library of recorded programmes appears as thumbnail boxes with date and title making it easy to fing anything you've recorded. I've installed various makes of DVD recorders for friends and in my opinion the Panasonic beats them all for ease of use and good features and menus.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but could be a lot more usable   December 31, 2008

Warned: this is going to be a picky review.

My previous dvd recorder was a Sony and while the Sony was still working well, I got this for the hard drive (couldn't bear to go abroad for weeks and miss my favourite TV programs).

Cons:
-Stupid advertisement taking up 1/3rd of the screen on the program guide, often flashing
-Program guide could easily show 2 or 3 more channels (less scrolling down to look at channels)
-I need to have ALL of my recordings to have subtitles and this does not allow you to set subtitle recording the default - inconvenient, although it is easy enough to turn the option on for each recording.
-Single tuner - will not let you watch another channel on digital when it is recording. Defeats the point of recording - I often record something because I want to watch something on another channel. But I do not have a flat screen tv and I heard you can do this if you have a tv with digital in it.
-Slow - I want instant access to menus, the hdd, options, etc.
-The box is just as big and heavy as my Sony. I want smaller and lighter.
-The Sony showed you if there was a recording during a time even if you can't see that channel on the program guide - with this, you don't get that, don't know if something will overlap before you try to record it, and that's a pain
-It's a bit complicated. Too many buttons, options and the manual is enough to put any busy person off although it is easier to use than other manuals I've seen and I appreciate options but I never really get around to understanding or using it all. Would like it simpler, more intuitive and easier
-If I press `return' or `exit' it often switches to my analogue TV and I can't get it back to digital with its remote. Argh, annoying. Have to find the analogue TV's remote to switch to AV.
-The fast forward is jerky. I want smooth fast forward like I can get on my computer cos I watch things on fastforward sometimes
-Can't use the program guide while recording (to look up progs, set timers) - not the case with the sony
-Can't delete items on dvds or the hdd while recording (easy to lose track of what you have seen - I delete when I finish watching something)

I can't comment on the sound or the mp3/picture stuff because I don't use those features.

Pros
- Well, it's good enough. It's probably better than most of the cheaper brands around. However, I am being harsh because it isn't much better user-friendly-wise than the Sony, which is 2+ years old, apart from the hdd. I want technology to move on, become more user friendly and at 200+, I think I can expect that
-I like the series record. Very useful, although I have yet to see how it goes.
-Lets you create a programs profile which makes watching tv a lot easier to navigate (can ditch the channels you never ever watch from your personalised list).
-Can watch dvds and recorded things on the hdd while recording.

Have only had it a few days. I just hope the quality and life expectancy will be as good as the Sony (so many of the cheap dvd recorders pack up soon).

Excellent delivery from amazon - fast dispatching and I love how I can track the package and know when it's going to be `out for delivery' so that I can be at home for it, although no exact times are given. They used City Link.
